we assume harry reid is here and their staffs are going back and forth. i spoke to one aide who said don't expect for any details to leak tonight. they'll be closed-lipped about this because the idea if anything does leak out it gives more of an opportunity for folks on either party to kill a deal if they don't like what they hear. some sort of a agreement will be announced tomorrow when the house is back in session and the senate is back in session and they can go back to say hey, this is the best opportunity. as far as the likelihood of this kraig, things have not been going well and there's optimism here and there and things are fluid like kristen says and it will be the final deal, but what we do know is these folks on capitol hill are very mindful of the damage that can be done to the economy if nothing is brief. we've had five down days in the stock market and we're preparing the country on tuesday for the first tax increase in 20 years, and i think finally at the end, that's starting to resonate at least with some of the elder members of both sides

harry reid wasn't at the capital yesterday. mitch mcconnell was there. the senior staff are trying to figure out what palsy is acceptable. they are trading very detailed information, they are getting scores from the joint committee on taxation to figure out how much money the various proposals raise. you have the white house team and democratic team in reid's office. the republican team in mcconnell's office. they are gaming out what they want and throw in offers across the table. the good news is they are trading those offers. >> t.j., can i say a word in defense of asinine politicians? the asinine politicians are reflecting real divisions in the country, divisions of self-interest, divisions of philosophy. it's more difficult to do because of the structure of our system, the way the two parties developed. ultimately, they are talking act thing that is cost people money and things that would benefit others financially. those are difficult issues to settle. you know, our system was designed to make them difficult to settle, not as difficult as they are i

that was a very personal shot from harry reid. is it accurate to say, open question, that speaker boehner is worried about staying speaker? >> yes. he's definitely -- i think he's not worried about his election on january 3rd, but that's not the end of it. you know, i think he's worried about his speakership every day he's speaker -- >> do you agree with that, he's worried he may be losing out or being thrown out of the speakership by his own party? >> for sure. he spent the first two years of his speakership looking over his shoulder as the camera shows of eric cantor right behind him ready -- sgroo but cantor is with him now, isn't he? hasn't his number two guy joined him? >> he's his number two guy and supporter but he's the spiritual leader of the tea party caucus there and that's the groo up that seems to be calling the shots right now in the house of representatives. >> let's talk about the republican party. let's try to be really analytical here. you know, to me two things happen in every election. one, somebody wins, someb

assume the house amends it, does harry reid even take it up? it depends what the amendment looks like. if it's going to be a significant spending cut, you have to understand, these negotiations are like jinga. piece upon piece upon piece. if you take something out, the whole thing can fall apart, and honestly, a spending cut amendment, especially one that would be accepted by all house republicans or a lot of the house republicans probably would hurt and blow away the carefully constructed compromise that was crafted and voted on early this morning. it's possible they could do it tomorrow because there's one day left. this congressional session expired 11:59 thursday. >> thank you so much. we hope they're not playing jangg on capitol hill but you did make it understandable for us. right now the country remains without a deal. we'll go to break and we'll join programming already in process. rachel maddow right after this. to turn it around, and we did. aig? we sa woman: we're helping joplin, missouri, come back from a devastating tornado. man: a

that's why harry reid said what he did. because we're not asking for a guardi guarantee this bill pass. we're asking for a vote that it passed the senate to provide tax relief to the middle class. >> congressman that phrase you use, simply allow a vote, it got me thinking about something tip o'neal told me years ago about his relationship with ronald reagan, which was nowhere near as friendly as it's been made out to be. they liked each other but weren't dpaktly best friend. speaker o'neal disagreed vehemently with president reagan's policy and ideology. he told me one of the things that allowed him to come together, both of them, both president reagan and speaker o'neal had what they called a respect for the voter. he knew that president reagan had won in 1980 and had been re-elected in 1984, and the speaker had a respect for the voter, for the voter's voice. it seems you say a percentage republicans perhaps with the benign leadership of speaker boehner have not given voice to the respect for the voter by disallowing a sim
